Federal government reaffirms support for supply management

Wednesday November 19, 2008

In a Speech from the Throne, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, addressed the Canadian and world economies and announced widespread support for supply management. The Governor General confirmed the Federal Government “will continue to support Canada’s farmers by ensuring freedom of choice for grain marketing in Western Canada and strongly supporting our supply-managed sectors at home and in international negotiations”.This strong statement is particularly encouraging in light of recentreports that a ministerial-level meeting may be called by the World TradeOrganization in December to again attempt to reach agreement on a new worldtrade deal. The Canadian dairy, poultry and egg farmers renew their commitment to working closely with Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Gerry Ritz and Minister of International Trade Stockwell Day in order to ensure that the three pillars of supply management - import controls, producer pricing and production discipline - remain intact following negotiations.

CFO continues to monitor developments at the WTO and ensure the interests of Ontario’s chicken farmers are represented.
