Meet Ontario’s Chicken Farmers

There are over 1,300 family-run chicken farms in 330 communities across the province.

Geoff McLean and his family live and work on the farm he grew up on. The McLeans joined the chicken business in 2018 and enjoy the flexibility and sustainability that chicken farming offers, particularly when attempting to balance the schedules of three children and a busy diversified farming operation.

Al Hiddema grew up on the family chicken farm and developed a passion for raising Ontario-grown chicken. Now, along with his wife Jolene, Al enjoys working with his family and takes pride in sharing his passion for chicken farming and agriculture with his daughters, as they continue to build the family business for future generations.

Together as a family, the Szmietts love growing safe, healthy, locally-grown chicken for Ontarians to enjoy. From setting up the barn for chicks, to daily barn checks, to running the business operations of the farm, raising chicken for Ontario families is something all the Szmietts, including the kids, take great pride in.

Joining the business through the New Entrant Chicken Farmer Program, the Kemp family credits the support from fellow farmers and chicken industry professionals for their success in raising safe, healthy, locally-grown chicken for Ontarians.

Mark and Amanda love to see their children explore what they are passionate about while also bringing ideas home for expansion and agriculture business diversity.

The Woods love to give back to their community, and that's why their favourite part of chicken farming is knowing that they are helping to raise the highest quality food for their fellow Ontarians.

For the Hutching family, their favourite part about farming is being able to interact with their customers and hear the positive feedback about their chicken and growing methods.
